Career Resources: What a Job Change Can't Accomplish

When considering using a recruiter, there are a few things to keep in mind that a job change cannot accomplish:

  1. Make you rich. Don't set your expectations too high because of what you "hear out there". Expect a 5-10% increase. 10% is very good and 15% rare (unless the person is underpaid). A job change increase will, theoretically, get you one year ahead in your compensation. Keep in mind this will compound every year for the rest of your career and will augment percentage contributions based on salary which go into 401k, profit share, and pension calculations.
  2. Give you a promotion. Most changes are lateral or slightly above in responsibility.
  3. Get you into a totally new role in which you have no experience. An experienced person is hired due to a proven track record in a specific role.
  4. Give you a guarantee of stability. Stability is usually predicted by performance and results. Remember, the best way to predict the future is to create it.
